Study settings
Open Study settings with the button just left of the gear, at the top right of the Study or Vocabulary tab.
Too many new words show up each day
In Study settings → New cards per day, choose 20, 50, or 100 cards, or set your own
number. The default is 50, and those 50 cards make up one Day.
My reviews have piled up
Try lowering Study settings → Daily review limit. Reviews over the limit carry over to the next
day, and the oldest come up first. Setting new cards to 0 for a while lets you clear just the backlog first.
I see the same word too often / too rarely
Adjust Study settings → Target retention. The default of 90% means a card comes back
when your chance of remembering it drops to 90%. Raise it and you'll see words more often; lower it and you'll see them less often.
I only want to study certain levels
Open a deck in the Vocabulary tab and tap Edit range to turn Days on or off. Words outside
the range won't appear as new cards.
I'd rather use just two grade buttons
Switch between 2 and 4 buttons in Study settings → Answer buttons. Grades from either
mode are compatible, so you can switch back and forth anytime.
New devices and backups
How do I move my progress to a new phone?
KotsuKotsu has no accounts, so nothing syncs automatically. You move your history with a file instead.
- Old device: save a JSON file with
Settings → Data → Export history - New device: choose that file with
Settings → Data → Import history
Saved words, notes, and study progress all come along.
Will deleting the app erase my history?
Yes. Your history lives only on your device, so it's deleted along with the app. Be sure to export it before you delete the app.
Sound
I can't hear the audio
Check the audio volume in Settings → Sound, and make sure your device isn't on silent.
Audio files are downloaded the first time you play them and kept on your device, so the first play
needs an internet connection. If you'll be offline, try downloading all audio in advance (below).
I want to hear audio without internet
Tap the round button in Settings → Sound → Download all audio to get every word's
audio at once. After that, audio plays even in airplane mode, and it starts the moment you tap.
- It takes about 118 MB. Downloading over Wi-Fi is recommended.
- Keep the app open while it downloads. Tap the button again to stop.
- Each voice is downloaded separately. If you change voices, you'll need to download that voice too.
- To delete it, tap the same button. Audio will simply download again as you play it.
I'm running out of storage
Downloaded audio takes the most space. Deleting it in Settings → Sound → Download all audio
frees about 118 MB, and everything still works, since audio is downloaded each time you play it.
I want words read aloud when I flip a card
Turn on Settings → Sound → Play audio when flipped. You can pick the voice there too.
I want a different voice
Choose one in Settings → Sound → Voice.
Notifications and accounts
I never get any notifications
That's by design. KotsuKotsu doesn't send notifications. We believe an app you open because you feel chased doesn't last, so we left them out from the start.
Where do I sign in?
There are no accounts. No sign-up and no login; just start using it. Your study history is never sent to a server and is stored only on your device. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Words and display
A meaning or reading looks wrong
Let us know and we'll check and fix it. Please email us the word and which level you saw it in.
The screen colors are hard on my eyes
Choose a light, dark, or system theme in Settings → Display. In
Visual effects on the same screen, you can turn off the background effects and glass blur separately.
I want to start over
Tap Settings → Data → Reset study history to erase all progress.
This can't be undone, so export first if you might need it.
Website
Temperatures from the website don't show up in the app
Website history stays in that browser only and doesn't sync with the app. With no accounts, there's nothing to connect the two. The website is for looking words up and flipping through them; the app handles your daily schedule.
Meanings look blurred on word pages
They're hidden so you don't see the answer first. Click a blurred line to reveal just that one, or flip the card to reveal everything. Turn it back to the front and they're hidden again.
